GOV. GREG ABBOTT VISITS BRENHAM

Governor Greg Abbott made an appearance in Brenham today (Monday).

Governor Greg Abbott speaks at a candidate
endorsement event for Trey Wharton on Monday at
the Ant Street Inn Ballroom in Brenham.

A packed crowd at the Ant Street Inn Ballroom greeted Abbott as part of a campaign kick-off event for his endorsed Republican candidate in the State House District 12 race, Trey Wharton.

Abbott spoke on many issues facing voters during this election cycle, including the economy, property taxes, education and immigration.

Abbott also discussed his shared values with Wharton and their fight against “woke” culture.

Abbott stated his desire to have Wharton as a representative in Austin, citing Wharton’s support on matters like school choice legislation and stronger border security.

After Abbott’s words, Wharton thanked him for his support and pledged to work closely with him if he is elected.  Wharton is running against Ben Bius and John Harvey Slocum in the March 5th primary.

Prior to Abbott’s speech, he was introduced by Washington County Judge John Durrenberger, who applauded Abbott for “doing the right thing” at the border.

According to State Senator Lois Kolkhorst, who along with Durrenberger was one of several local and area dignitaries in attendance at the event, it has been several years – though still during Abbott’s tenure as governor – since he was last in Brenham.  Abbott has served as governor since 2015.

Though those in attendance were largely in support of Abbott, a group of protestors stood outside, holding signs critical of him.  The event remained peaceful.

  1. Let’s be crystal clear about this issue. The majority of people you want to give school choice to CANNOT afford to add the money necessary to attend a private school. Period! That must be remembered!! Just read about schools in Ohio whose voucher and charter school money is going to the parents of wealthy parents who already have kids enrolled in private schools. Those school administrators are requiring the parents to apply for that money telling them that yes, you too, are entitled to claim it. Read for yourself. That is corrupt! So, we need to keep our public schools strong! Not starve them out of their money, and drive them out of business! That is not fair to our nation’s children, and here in Texas, too! You might not be aware of this, but in some school districts, they don’t even have money to bus their children to athletic events and parents are having to drive them. I know that for a fact! What is going on with that and here we sit with a huge rainy day fund. What Exactly is a rainy day??? That money just gets bigger and bigger and Abbott boasts and boasts and boasts about it. He is not representative of all children for the state of Texas! Nor are our other top two officials. Dig your head out of the sand and see what is happening before it’s too late. Put our children upfront where they deserve to be. Put your personal political beliefs in your back pocket where it belongs. Let’s not act like the Education leader Betsy DeVos appointed by Trump to head our national education!! She knew absolutely nothing about public schools, but was put in charge of them. Her kids all went to private schools and she admitted it. She could not even answer, basic questions that all teachers could about education!! it was a good day for education when they got her out of there once and for all!!!

  2. I’m with you No Doubt”. Abbott and the other top two want to bankrupt public schools. We should cherish the fact we are one of the few nations on earth who support free education FOR ALL!!! Private schools are not the answer unless you feel you are an entitled, privileged American. And guess what, research across the US is showing that parents from expensive private schools are getting the money that is supposed to go to these other programs. It is actually bringing more money to the rich and not the poor! That is not the intent. Support our public schools at all cost, it was good enough for my kids here in Brenham and it sure paid off even in college. Give our schools and teachers that respect that they deserve and quit running them into the ground. And another thing, private schools are not for children with any disabilities whatsoever. They do not want to serve them and don’t because they don’t have to. If you have a problem with a child. DO NOT send them to a private school. And lastly, a lot of research shows that the education is not all that much better in a private school setting than it is in public schools. It’s just that you get to be around more people like yourself if that’s important to you. You don’t value diversity.

    1. I have a receipt for my ad valorem taxes that is indisputable evidence proving public education is not “free” as you attempt to claim. The rest of your post is also indisputable evidence that proves our public education system has, indeed, failed. Leftists talking points that are easily debunked.

    2. The USA has dumbed down nearly all schools in the name of what? You know the answer. We spend more and get less on students than anyone in the world. Gone to a store lately and pay cash they can barely make change without calculator. Ron White said it best you can’t fix stupid. It is not their fault its ours for putting up with this madness. If you don’t win you lose and no trophy get it! Competition drives perfection! So get on board or get left behind enough is enough in my opinion! Thank you

    3. Perhaps private school students are just more intelligent because they’re held to actual standards. Attacking children who go to private schools as elitist seems a tad silly.

  3. He absolutely wants someone else in Austin supporting taking money from public schools and funneling it to private schools.

    1. Have you seen BISD and it’s rampant mismanagement? Frankly, they deserve funding to be re-appropriated into alternatives at this point

      1. Yes indeed BISD is in deep trouble withe board voting 5 to 2 on a 5million plus budget and NO WAY on how to get the $ as well as fact the 2 that voted against it had been asking and asking for a copy of the budget and got it a few days before the vote, then there cfo resigned and the superintendent resigned in less than a week after that was presented. The test scores on the students is a horror and these kids and community deserve better. The TASB group MUST GO the agenda is anti teaching of children as in dumbing them down there is so much more to that ordeal but there are those in BISD district making some headway on the state coming in to do an audit the signatures were sent in now we wait for them to start, and other things are being done as well. Check into Let our Teachers Teach and go from there.

      2. To be fair, both public and private schools can have poor management and accountability. Homeschooling can be fantastic or terrible, and it varies from the one to the next. Not the same age ranges or purpose, necessarily, but day cares and Sunday schools can also have scandals.

If there’s any doubt, just search for Texas private school scandals on Google.

And if you really want to go down the rabbit hole, search for private equity in K-12 education. That’s all that this is really about in my opinion. It wasn’t enough that they took over the old folks homes and run rampant Medicaid fraud. They want the schools too.

    2. They are “funneling” a student off as well, so the ratio of money to students stays the same. What is the point you are trying to make? That public schools aren’t overcrowded? That fewer students would result in a worse education?

      1. Yes, and the fewer students in BISD means less cost for the school district. That’s never mentioned. I like to use results as the factor for judging what’s best for my child. The best product should win and private schools, here in the county, are turning out some really good products.

        1. You bet LJ. But I pay a fortune in school taxes and can’t afford private schooling. But if i could that’s where they would be. Even though there is so much distraction because of bad behavior the teachers have no classroom management skills. I controlled the classroom better then the teacher. And seems they will hand pick bad kids to put in a new teachers room. Seasoned teachers get their pick or choice. …Strong classroom management skill is a must to maintain control or the other good kids can’t learn. Class is over by time this is accomplished. Sorry but that’s the way it is.

        2. Not true. If the student headcount is reduced by 20% in BISD for example, they are not going to be able to close any schools or consolidate very many admin positions. You’ll still have to operate and maintain the same facilities and pay the existing bonds for them. You still have to pay the Same number of principals, counselors, coaches, SROs, cafeteria workers, bus drivers, and so on. You might cut a few teachers, but not the specialists. You won’t see almost any disabled kids going to private schools because the costs involved are so insane. It’s the kids whose parents have and will spend resources on their kids that BISD would lose. I’d wager that those kids don’t cost BISD as much as the other kids.

The only place that BISD would be able to reduce headcount is with teaching staff. It would not take much effort. There would be a competitive market for teachers. The good ones would make better money elsewhere, not in any private schools here in Brenham but probably in the suburbs of a big city. They’ll follow the money. BISD will either have to pay more to retain the teachers they have or they’ll just be left hiring anybody with a warm body.

Reduce headcount by 20% and I’ll bet you that it doesn’t reduce budget by 5%. Give it five years and no inflation and the budget will be even higher than it was to start with. Meanwhile the state will still be in the hook for vouchers, meaning bigger more wasteful government.

And those private schools that you might think will be religious, well our hospital and biggest retirement home used to be religious too but Wall Street and private equity overran over that whole sector. That’s what this is all about. Follow the money.

Don’t California our Texas! Vote against big government spending, state control over local issues, special interests, and special privileges for a privileged few. That and we need some term limits on state leadership.

    1. So if you disagree with what this Governor is doing in his official capacity, then you are a Socialist? Please explain that.

    2. Bob, do you think that it was helpful or productive to “label” people just because they espouse a different political view than you do? Your “dog whistle” label was neither kind nor smart. That is EXACTLY what is wrong with SOME folk in this country! The citizens standing “in front of the red bear” are Americans who are exercising their Constitutional right to protest their displeasure or disagreement. Commend them for doing so peacefully!
