FORTNIGHTLY CLUB ENJOYS ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL USED BOOK SALE

The Fortnightly Club of Brenham drew big crowds and raised tens of thousands of dollars for the Nancy Carol Roberts Memorial Library during this past week’s Used Book Sale.

The Washington County Expo’s commercial exhibits building was filled to the brim with books, movies, vinyl records, CDs and other items for shoppers to take home with them.

According to Fortnightly Club Reporter Martha McNutt, the sale brought in over 3,000 people – some from as far away as New York – and preliminarily raised over $30,000, before expenses.

Club Past President Lu Hollander says while sale proceeds look to be down by a few thousand dollars from last year, the 2023 sale was record-setting, and this year’s event still did very well overall.  She says the sale would not be possible without the continued support from the public.

Hollander says the opening day of the sale had large turnout, aided by the fact that it was Presidents’ Day, a holiday, so more families could come with their children.  There were also special sale events like on Saturday, where visitors could pick up a canvas bag and stuff it with merchandise for $10.  Several nonprofit organizations were able to come in on Sunday and pick up books for free.

Hollander thanks all of the club volunteers and other groups like the Blinn College men’s soccer team who helped to prepare books for the sale by cleaning, sorting and pricing.

The Fortnightly Club has a 24-hour donation drop-off at its book house at 906 North Park Street in Brenham.
