These past few months have been particularly busy for members of Washington County 4-H, participating in numerous competitions around the state.

From Odessa, Fort Worth and San Angelo to San Antonio, Houston and Austin, 4-Hers have represented Washington County this spring in various livestock shows, contests and challenges while taking home many awards and accolades.

Pearl Jones, Washington County Extension Agent for 4-H and Youth Development, says she is proud of the hard work put in by local students and is happy to see their devotion pay off.

According to Jones, there are around 520 kids between kindergarten and 12th grade that are enrolled in Washington County 4-H.  Their activities include livestock showing, food challenges, consumer decision making, skill-a-thons, livestock judging and horse judging.  There is also the 4-H Roundup which features educational presentations, talent showcases and public speaking.  Jones says the county will take 4-Hers next week to participate in the district Roundup contest in Victoria.

There will be more programs for youth to get involved in soon, as Jones says 4-H is working on bringing back a shooting sports club and getting a robotics team started.

From here, Jones says 4-H will move on to showmanship clinics and leadership conferences in the summer.  The 4-H Family Night, which will honor members for their accomplishments over the past year, will be held the first Friday in August.
