HOUSE DISTRICT 12 CANDIDATES SPEAK ON CAMPAIGN PRIORITIES AT FORUM

Both candidates in the Republican primary runoff for Texas House District 12 joined KWHI on Tuesday for a forum to share their ideas and goals for the region.

Ben Bius

Ben Bius and Trey Wharton answered questions on topics including economic policy, education, property taxes, the southern border, and the growth being experienced in House District 12.

Speaking on school vouchers, Bius said the answer is not simple, as schools should not be subjected to a one-size-fits-all approach.  He believes true change starts in the classroom.

Trey Wharton

Wharton said dialogue on proposed legislation has been back and forth in the House and Senate, but he ultimately supports allowing families to choose the educational setting that best suits their children while also keeping public schools strong.

Shifting to property taxes, both Bius and Wharton said they are open to reform.  Bius said sales taxes can be more versatile.

Wharton said excessive property taxation turns homeowners into renters.

Bius and Wharton received the most votes out of the three candidates in the March 5th primary, advancing to the runoff on May 28th.  The election is for the seat of Kyle Kacal, who did not run for another term.

The winner of the runoff will face Democrat Dee Howard Mullins and Libertarian Robert Profili in November.

Early voting for the runoff will be held from May 20-24.
