WASHINGTON CO. HONORS VETERANS AT MEMORIAL DAY PROGRAM

  

Residents gathered today (Monday) to honor fallen veterans and remember their sacrifices during the Washington County Veterans Association’s annual Memorial Day program at the Brenham American Legion Hall.

The featured speaker was retired and decorated U.S. Army Sergeant Major Monica Stephenson, who served for 36 years in the Army, including 11.5 years in active duty and 24.5 years in reserves.

Stephenson talked about her experiences as a combat medic and practical nurse, as well as her service in Fort Polk, Louisiana; Baumholder, Germany; the Schofield Barracks in Hawaii; and her deployments to Saudi Arabia, Iraq and Kuwait.

Stephenson said she will always remember the pride of being a soldier and called it an honor and a privilege to serve alongside those who have now been called home.

Local government officials and representatives also spoke, including Washington County Judge John Durrenberger, Brenham Mayor Atwood Kenjura, Burton Mayor Karen Buck, and John Brieden on behalf of State Senator Lois Kolkhorst.
