BURTON SCHOOL BOARD TERMINATES CONTRACT WITH DSA

Burton ISD trustees voted unanimously at a called meeting this (Monday) morning to approve a resolution terminating the district’s contract with DSA, Inc.

The school district has been under contract with DSA for construction manager agent services since the passage of the November 2021 school bond proposal

Frustration has grown in the school community as the bond project has lagged behind schedule.  When trustees learned at their regular meeting on May 13th that several bond contracts had not been signed by the school district for months, they criticized DSA representatives for not alerting them sooner.

Interim Burton ISD Superintendent Rob Barnwell told KWHI in a statement that today’s action was “determined to be necessary.”  Barnwell said, “The district is currently investigating the appropriate steps to take in order to ensure the BISD construction project can move forward in a timely and effective manner.”

  1. The two reasons Burton excepts any and all transfer students is it makes the superintendent look good and the school gets around $10k per student from the state, has nothing to do with make the school better or better for the community.

At some point someone is going to have to be responsible for this mess. They are changing superintendents fired contractors, fired the company managing the bond. The school board should fire themselves also.

Who is over seeing the $42 million? With it already way behind schedule and over budget who is going to be responsible for that?

  2. While I can understand this reaction. But how far behind will this put the construction?

Obviously the school was expanding, because of increased student population (reason for the bond).

There have been space issues at the school for a growing number of years. Why does Burton keep accepting more transfer students (that aren’t staff children)? Is it a money grab? I am sure the ISD parents would like whoever makes these decisions to reconsider. Especially since the expanded school isn’t getting built anytime soon! And good luck trying to pass another bond to fix the mess they have now. I don’t think they will be fooled twice.

Will the rising numbers of transfer students take resources from new in district students/current students? I have heard parents love the district due to smaller class sizes. Yet, class sizes are steadily growing, due to transfer students (that aren’t staff kids). If they don’t get numbers under control, it will be Brenham before long. But Brenham has so many additional programs, staff, support, etc. that Burton doesn’t.
