Firefighters were called out just after 2 p.m. to a structure fire at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church at FM 1155 and Mt. Pleasant Lane, close to Washington-on-the-Brazos.

Meyersville Volunteer Fire Chief Trey Burleson said units arrived to find the church fully involved and an adjacent building catching on fire.

Responding were the Washington, Meyersville, Chappell Hill, Brenham and Navasota Fire Departments.  Also assisting were Washington County EMS and the Washington County CERT team.  By 7 p.m., the fire was extinguished and units were back in service.

Burleson said the church was a total loss, but firefighters were able to save the second building with minimal fire damage.  No one was at the church at the time, so there are no injuries to report.

The Washington County Sheriff’s Office, ATF and State Fire Marshal’s Office are investigating.

The cause is currently unknown, but Burleson said it does not appear to be suspicious.
