BURTON BRIDGE MINISTRY DELIVERING EXTRA NUTRITION THIS SUMMER

Burton Bridge Ministry has been packaging extra food parcels for low-income children in the Burton area.

The program started back in the spring and is continuing this summer.

Each week, the parents of 19 children are picking up food packages from Burton Bridge Ministry’s location on North Main Street.

Contents include kid-friendly proteins, a vegetable, drinks, breakfast items, fruit, and snacks.

While it is an expensive endeavor, the ministry feels that the program is necessary for the health and well-being of area children.

According to the Ministry, other Brazos Valley school districts are offering non-perishable foods through the Brazos Valley Food Bank’s Backpack Program, or the Texas Department of Agriculture’s Healthy Summer Meals for Kids program, but neither of those options are available through Burton ISD.

Executive Director Debbie Schroeder said that the school district is not offering either program this year, but she is hoping under the new administration that they might get re-added in the fall.

Burton Bridge Ministry is underwriting the entire expense, assisted by direct financial donations as well as food collected by the ministry’s partner churches.

They have also launched a new partnership with the Brazos Valley Food Bank, making available food packages for senior citizens who qualify due to income and age.

Schroeder said that the Senior Outreach Program has already proven popular and the ministry expects the numbers to grow as more senior citizens learn about the program.
