BRENHAM FIREFIGHTERS, EMS RESPOND TO GAS LEAK AT NURSING HOME

No injuries are reported after first responders were called to a gas leak Thursday evening at a Brenham nursing home.

The Brenham Fire Department says shortly after 7:15 p.m., firefighters received a report of a gas leak in the kitchen area at Focused Care at Brenham, 1303 Highway 290 East.  Firefighters arrived and checked the kitchen area, and they had several detections of gas leaking in the building.

Units helped staff evacuate the building and shut off gas flow while they began ventilating the building with fresh air from fans.  Washington County EMS was on location for patient care while the fire department cleared the building.  The City of Brenham Gas Department locked out the gas meter until the system could be pressure-tested.

After the building was cleared, firefighters turned the scene over to management.

Other calls on Thursday for the Brenham Fire Department include a grass fire just before 6 a.m. in the 300 block of Old Navasota Road.  Upon arrival, it was discovered to be a controlled burn that was called in, so no action was needed.

At 6:30 a.m., units responded to a crash without entrapment in the 2900 block of Old Chappell Hill Road.  They found a passenger car with front-end damage from hitting a tree.  Steam was coming from the car that was mistaken for smoke.  Firefighters stood by for traffic control until the car was removed.  No injuries were reported.

The fire department also listed three other minor motor vehicle accidents in the city, where BFD members were called for traffic control and to clean up leaking fluids.  No further specifics on the calls were provided.
