BURLESON COUNTY JAIL FOUND TO BE IN NON-COMPLIANCE WITH THE STATE

The Burleson County Jail in Caldwell has been issued a notice of non-compliance by the Texas Commission on Jail Standards in reference to a detainee’s death.

The notice, which was issued on August 27, said that the Burleson County Jail violated minimum jail standards by not providing medications at the proper time and not conducting required in-person check-ins on inmates.

The Jail Commission said in the notice that after conducting a review of Medication Administration Records following the death of a patient that was in custody, it was determined that a medication that was supposed to given to the inmate twice a day was only being given once a day, and another medication that was supposed to be given once a day, wasn’t being given at all.

The identity of the detainee has not been released.

Jailers are also required to have face-to-face check-ins with inmates at least once an hour, and at least once every thirty minutes for at-risk inmates. At-risk inmates include those that are assaultive, potentially suicidal, mentally ill, or demonstrating bizarre behavior.

After reviewing video, the Commission stated in that they noticed that five scheduled face-to-face check-ins were not conducted as required.

The Jail Commission is requiring the Burleson County Jail to make corrections on both violations as soon as possible.  Sheriff Gene Hermes told KWHI that the sheriff’s office is taking corrective actions.
