BURLESON COUNTY JAIL FOUND TO BE IN NON-COMPLIANCE WITH THE STATE

The Burleson County Jail in Caldwell has been issued a notice of non-compliance by the Texas Commission on Jail Standards in reference to a detainee’s death.

The notice, which was issued on August 27, said that the Burleson County Jail violated minimum jail standards by not providing medications at the proper time and not conducting required in-person check-ins on inmates.

The Jail Commission said in the notice that after conducting a review of Medication Administration Records following the death of a patient that was in custody, it was determined that a medication that was supposed to given to the inmate twice a day was only being given once a day, and another medication that was supposed to be given once a day, wasn’t being given at all.

The identity of the detainee has not been released.

Jailers are also required to have face-to-face check-ins with inmates at least once an hour, and at least once every thirty minutes for at-risk inmates. At-risk inmates include those that are assaultive, potentially suicidal, mentally ill, or demonstrating bizarre behavior.

After reviewing video, the Commission stated in that they noticed that five scheduled face-to-face check-ins were not conducted as required.

The Jail Commission is requiring the Burleson County Jail to make corrections on both violations as soon as possible.  Sheriff Gene Hermes told KWHI that the sheriff’s office is taking corrective actions.

  1. seems to me that the inmates should know when and how often to take their meds and any inmate that is insane or mentally unstable shouldn’t be at a county jail these jailers are not baby sitters or nurse mates sounds like some inmate is trying to get some money out of the county use to be do a crime serve the time now it’s do a crime go to jail and try to sue for being mistreated or abused what ever the case may be and a once in an hour face check they don’t even do that hospitals Here’s an idea maybe obey the law then they wouldn’t have to go to jail just a thought

  2. Washington County does not have this problem with jail. However we do have a problem with fair wages to county employees. The Chief Jailer needs a big raise and the Director of EMS needs a big cut in pay along with the six or seven below him. Paramedics do not need to make more than Lawyers,Civil Engineers, Chief’s of law enforcement or fire. Top of the 100 thousand or more a year club you guessed it all EMS. How is being a Paramedic more dangerous than any of the above mentioned. This only happens here in Washington county because the 3 John, Don, and Kirk allowed it to happen and denied a well deserving Chief Jailer whose jail passes every year. Vote the wage suppressors out. Don is being replaced next year. One down two to go.
