LEE COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE INVESTIGATES THREATS MADE TO LOCAL SCHOOLS

The Lee County Sheriff’s Office investigated a pair of potential threats that were made to Dime Box ISD and Giddings ISD on Monday.

According to Lee County Sheriff Garrett Durrenberger, his Office was alerted to a potential threat at Dime Box ISD on Monday morning.

Additional precautionary security measures were set in place by the school district, and an extra law enforcement presence was deployed.

The Lee County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division was later able to determine that there was no credible threat. They were assisted by Lee County Precinct Four Constable Steven Pohorelsky.

Sheriff Durrenberger explained that out of an abundance of caution, any and all situations of this nature are treated as credible until deemed otherwise by school administration and law enforcement.

Then, Giddings ISD Superintendent, Dr. Ray DeSpain, posted a message on the school district’s website this (Tuesday) afternoon. It said that on Monday afternoon the Lee County Sheriff’s Office received a message alleging that a student had been overheard making a threat to do harm at the school.

School personnel were immediately alerted, and began a full investigation in cooperation with law enforcement personnel. That investigation went late into the evening Monday, and continued through lunch time today (Tuesday).

DeSpain said that at no time was there ever any credible evidence of danger to any student or staff member, nor was there any weapon involved or threat of harm verified.

He also asked that in the future, any person with credible knowledge of an incident or threat is encouraged to report it to appropriate school personnel or law enforcement instead of posting on social media.

He added that they will always do their due diligence to make sure all students and staff are safe at all times.

Giddings ISD whole heartedly believes in the slogan of: “If you see something, say something.”

However, repeating rumors and spreading false information with no credibility only creates fear and makes it more difficult for the District to respond in these type situations.

Sheriff Durrenberger told KWHI that it is believed that the two incidents are not related.
