BURTON SCHOOL BOARD RECEIVES STRONG TEST SCORES REPORT, HEARS STATUS UPDATE ON BOND PROJECT

  

Burton ISD trustees on Monday heard a positive report on student test scores.

As the school district is still waiting on the release of official accountability ratings from the Texas Education Agency, Superintendent Vikki Curry said she and the campus principals created their own preliminary STAAR/EOC data using student test scores provided by the state.

Through this unofficial data, which tracks if students “approached”, “met” or “mastered” their subjects, Curry said students outperformed the state in 52 out of 63 performance categories measured.

Curry said the district wanted to compile this data to get a head start on how to get the 11 remaining categories to where they need to be. 

The short presentation drew cheerful remarks from board members, with Trustee Misty Lucherk calling the scores “awesome” and Trustee Demetrius Colvin saying the campuses are “going in the right direction.”

The board also heard an update on the district’s bond project from construction manager-agent Weaver & Jacobs Constructors.  Weaver & Jacobs Project Manager Randy Boone talked about the crane onsite and mentioned that the district will need to coordinate with Bluebonnet Electric to find appropriate times to perform electrical work that would need several days to complete.  

Discussing the progress with the football field, Boone said the home press box is set and that the scoreboard will hopefully be operational in two to three weeks.  He said as of right now, the goal is to get three home games in on the field this season.

In other business, the board:

• Tabled a three-year agreement with CR Texas for district fuel.  The item was tabled to allow the company the opportunity to come give a presentation to the board and answer questions from trustees.
• Approved Burton ISD’s district, elementary and secondary campus improvement plans.
• Approved a policy amendment pertaining to the Guardian program.  Curry said this is a housekeeping item to align with an update from the Texas Association of School Boards.
• Approved a resolution formally closing out the contract between Burton ISD and its former delinquent property tax collector, Linebarger Goggan Blair & Sampson LLP.
• Received a report on tax collections.
