CUBS OFFENSE EXPLODES IN 73-42 BLOWOUT OF KILLEEN

Jakoby Dixon (Missy Robinson)

Behind a record night from Jakoby Dixon and their biggest offensive output in 52 years, the Brenham Cub Football Team crushed the Killeen Kangaroos 73-42 on Thursday night at Cub Stadium.

Dixon, the sophomore runningback, ran for seven touchdowns, which tied a school record for most rushing touchdowns in a single game. Dixon shares the record with Norm Audich, who scored seven rushing touchdowns in a game against Navasota back in 1921.

Dixon also finished with 291 yards rushing, which was just 48 yards shy of another school record. Earnest Patterson holds that record with 339. Just for good measure, Dixon also threw a touchdown pass as well.

The Cubs got things going on their first play from scrimmage as QB Jordan Harvey found HB Hagen Frank for a 90-yard touchdown pass, and Bleu Cienega added the extra point to make it 7-0 at 10:19.

Killeen tied it on the next drive as QB D'Angelo Ingram found WR Antwoine Warren on a 68-yard touchdown pass. Dawood Al Mashhadani added the extra point to tie it 7-7 at 9:17.

Brenham jumped back in front on a 49-yard touchdown run from Dixon, his first one on the night, and Cienega added the extra point to make it 14-7 Cubs with 7:56 left to go in the first quarter.

Ingram then threw a touchdown pass to WR T'Antrae Thomas, and an extra point later by Al Mashhadani tied it 14-14 at 4:09.

Dixon put the Cubs back in front with his second touchdown of the night, which was a 36-yard run. Cienega added another extra point to give Brenham a 21-14 advantage with 2:18 still to go in the first quarter.

After DT Darius Brown recovered a fumble, the Cubs would score again on a trick play that saw Dixon hitting WR Chris Guidry for a 35-yard touchdown pass. Cienega stayed perfect with another PAT kick to make it 28-14 Cubs at 1:57.

Killeen was not done as RB Kardae Hicks broke free for a 52-yard run with 11 seconds left in the quarter to cut the Brenham lead to 28-21.

The Kangaroos added another touchdown to start the second quarter and tie it 28-28.

Cienega then nailed a 31-yard field goal to give the Cubs the lead again 31-28.

Hicks broke off a 48-yard touchdown for Killeen to give them their first, and only lead of the game, 35-31.

With 3:33 left in the second quarter, Dixon added his third rushing touchdown of the night on a 52-yard scamper. Cienega added the extra point to make it 38-35 Brenham as the teams went into the locker room at half time.

The second half was totally dominated by the Cubs. Dixon got it started with a 14-yard touchdown run, his fourth of the night. A Cienega PAT later gave Brenham a 45-35 lead with 9:58 left.

On the ensuing drive, LB Doyle Brown picked off a pass from Ingram and returned it 70 yards for a touchdown. Cienega kicked another extra point to make it 52-35 Cubs with 7:44 to go in the third quarter.

LB Braeden Gandy recovered a fumble on the next drive, which set up a 41-yard touchdown for Dixon, his fifth of the night. Cienega's next kick made it 59-35 at 5:21.

Killeen then fumbled ensuing the kickoff, and it was recovered by Brenham. Dixon would later score on an eight-yard run, which was number six on the night. The extra point by Cienega gave the Cubs a 66-35 lead with 3:44 left in the third quarter.

Brenham would get one more score in the fourth quarter as Dixon was scored touchdown number seven on a nine-yard run with 10:41 left in the game. Cienega finished the night a perfect ten for ten on extra points to give the Cubs a 73-35 lead.

Isaiah Jones added one more touchdown for Killeen on a four-yard run with 2:21 left to play. Al Hashhadani added the extra point to finish out the scoring at 73-42.

The 73 points scored by the Cubs are the sixth most in school history. They are also the most points scored by a Cub team since 1972.

Brenham is now 4-0 on the season, which is the team's best start since the 2011 season. Next up, the Cubs will wrap up non-district play against Gilmer. The neutral site game will be played next Friday, September 27, at 7pm at Huntsville ISD Stadium.

KWHI will have live coverage beginning with the pregame at 6:30pm on 1280AM, 101.7FM, and KWHI.com.
