BELLVILLE HS GRADUATE RECOGNIZED FOR ASSISTING HOUSTON POLICE OFFICER

  

A Bellville High School graduate was recently honored by the Houston Police Department for coming to the aid of an officer during an encounter with a suspect.

Kevin Shuff, who graduated in 1998 from Bellville High School and works in the City of Houston’s Planning and Development Department, was presented a Public Service Award for intervening when the suspect began to attack the officer.  The award is in recognition of Shuff’s “extraordinary commitment and unselfish service rendered.” 

The award reads that on February 23^rd, Shuff witnessed an officer chasing a suspect outside Houston City Hall.  As the officer pursued the suspect, he lost his footing and fell, at which point the suspect jumped on top of the officer and began throwing punches. 

Shuff feared that the suspect may try to take the officer’s gun, so he stepped in by holding the suspect down until backup units arrived.  They were able to safely place the suspect in handcuffs and found a folding knife in his pants pocket.

The award states, “Thanks to Mr. Shuff’s heroic and swift actions and knowing the suspect may or may not be armed, he brought an incident under control to prevent further injuries to the officer, bystanders, or the suspect.”
