The accident occurred around 7 p.m. at the intersection of Highway 290 and FM 390.

According to DPS Sergeant Justin Ruiz, the fire truck was traveling eastbound on Highway 290 and was preparing to turn left onto FM 390, with its emergency lights on.  Traffic had stopped to let the fire truck through, but it was then struck by a westbound Toyota Tacoma that was driving on the shoulder.

The two firefighters, identified in a release from the Carmine VFD as Chief Chris Carmean and Cody Wunderlich, were taken to Baylor Scott & White in Brenham with minor injuries.  The driver of the Tacoma was also transported to Baylor Scott & White and sustained minor injuries as well.

Volunteer David Mohr wrote in the fire department’s release that the department was responding to assist with a hay fire call off of FM 1697 at the time of the accident.

Mohr said the two firefighters who were hurt were released later Sunday night.  However, one of the department’s main grass trucks was totaled.

DPS is investigating the accident.  Mohr reminds the public to give first responders the right-of-way during emergencies.
