Brenham ISD campus contributions toward the KBTX Food for Families Food Drive on December 4th made up over half of all of Washington County’s food donated toward the drive.

At Monday’s Brenham School Board meeting, Brazos Valley Food Bank and Brenham ISD Education Foundation board member Carl Prihoda announced that the school district’s seven campuses collected and donated 5,921 pounds of food for the drive.  He said that total is roughly 55 percent of Washington County’s total of 10,684 pounds of food donated.

Going by individual campuses, Brenham High School collected the most food at 2,033 pounds, followed by Brenham Elementary School at 1,357 pounds, Brenham Middle School at 1,159 pounds, Alton Elementary School at 1,058 pounds, Krause Elementary School at 210 pounds, Brenham Junior High School at 67 pounds, and the Early Childhood Learning Center at 37 pounds.

All food collected and money raised in Washington County during the food drive goes to support the Brazos Valley Food Bank’s partner agencies in the county: Bread Partners of Washington County, Burton Bridge Ministry, Faith Mission & Help Center, and Prairie Hill Food Pantry.

As a whole in Washington County, the food drive’s monetary collections of $5,812 are down from last year’s $6,500 but the 10,684 pounds of food are up from last year’s 9,552 pounds.  Prihoda said locally, this was the drive’s second-highest year for food donations in the four years the drive has been active in Washington County, adding that in today’s economy, food contributions go further than they used to.

Prihoda thanked all of the students and student organizations for their efforts to collect food and volunteer during the main event.  He also thanked the parents for helping make this gesture to the community at large, as well as the board of trustees, district administrators, teachers and staff for “raising top-notch students.”

In other business on Monday, the board approved revisions to school library policy, pertaining to library book selection in adherence to House Bill 900 from the 88th Legislature.  Brenham ISD Chief of Staff Christine Johnson said these provide clarification by adding definitions of state penal code and education code.

Much of the board’s discussion on the item came during its meeting last month, so trustees had few questions before voting to approve the revisions.  Trustee Archer Archer did ask that any time book material is reviewed and ruled on, the board can see what the ruling was in an observational capacity.  Superintendent Clay Gillentine replied that the superintendent and board are supposed to be notified, per local policy, if a book is being contested.

The board also agreed to renew a contract for lawn care services with Green Lawn Care Services.  The one-year renewal maintains the existing rate of $80,399.
