2024 RECAP: BURTON ISD SUPT. VIKKI CURRY

As the door closes on 2024 and opens for 2025, KWHI is speaking to local officials to reflect on the past year.

Burton ISD Superintendent Vikki Curry

Our series continues with Burton ISD Superintendent Vikki Curry, who talked about what 2024 brought for the school district and what it intends to accomplish in the year to come.

Curry says she is “filled with gratitude and pride” for all that Burton ISD achieved this year and appreciates the warm welcome extended to her upon taking on the superintendent’s role in the summer.  She says she is inspired by the dedication, talent and commitment of students and staff, as well as the support from the community, and feels “the sky’s the limit” for the future.

The bond construction project hit a major milestone this year, as the football team was able to host its first game at the new stadium.  Curry says working with new construction manager-agent Weaver & Jacobs Constructors has been “nothing short of amazing” and is confident that progress on the other portions of the bond project can roll smoothly.

Once the high school, band hall and gym improvements are complete, work will shift to the junior high additions and cafeteria renovations, which are targeted to start in late 2025 and be done by fall 2026.

Along with the bond improvements, an important focus of 2025 will be how education is impacted by decisions by Texas lawmakers.  However, Curry knows it is too early to say what will or will not come down from Austin, so right now, the attention needs to be on what is happening locally.

Curry was hired in June as Burton ISD’s next superintendent, following the district’s approval of a voluntary retirement agreement in March with former superintendent Dr. Edna Kennedy.  Curry previously served as the assistant superintendent for teaching and learning in Galveston ISD and also held administrative roles in Coldspring-Oakhurst CISD and Spring ISD.
