WASHINGTON CO. COMMISSIONERS TO HOLD PUBLIC HEARING, VOTE ON CALLING ELECTION FOR EMERGENCY SERVICES DISTRICT
Washington County Commissioners will hold a public hearing on Tuesday before voting on whether to call an election for the county’s first emergency services district (ESD).
Should commissioners decide to call an election, a measure will go on the May 3rd ballot for residents who live in the service territories of the Chappell Hill and Meyersville Volunteer Fire Departments. The ESD would levy an ad valorem tax of no more than $0.10 per $100 valuation on those residents, excluding those inside the City of Brenham’s extraterritorial jurisdiction.
In November, commissioners voted 3-2 to accept a petition for the creation of the ESD. The action was procedural in nature, involving the issuance of necessary notices through the county clerk’s office and the scheduling of Tuesday’s public hearing. Commissioner Kirk Hanath and former Commissioner Don Koester voted against accepting the petition.
Also on Tuesday, commissioners will look to go out for bids for the EMS District 6 satellite response station at Lake Somerville. Bids will be due and opened on February 6th at 10 a.m., and will be accepted at a later date.
In other business, the court will consider:
- Appointing Dr. John Griggs to the Washington County Historical Commission.
- Hearing the Office of Emergency Management’s quarterly report.
- Enrolling in Texas Association of Counties cybersecurity training for the 2025 reporting year.
- Approving bond renewals for reserve deputy sheriffs Justin Knuppel, Ruben Fuentes and William Scott Atwood.
Commissioners will meet Tuesday at 9 a.m. at the Washington County Courthouse Annex.
