THREE CALLS THURSDAY FOR CHAPPELL HILL VFD
The Chappell Hill Volunteer Fire Department was called out three times on Thursday.
One of those calls was for a structure fire around 3 a.m. in the area of Old River Road in Washington. Chappell Hill firefighters were dispatched as mutual aid for the Washington Volunteer Fire Department and arrived on scene to find half of a house engulfed, with the roof collapsed.
The Chappell Hill VFD established command and called for more resources from other departments before starting the initial fire attack. The Meyersville, Navasota, Salem and Berlin VFDs came to assist.
Washington County EMS provided medical oversight to ensure firefighters remained in good condition. The Washington County Sheriff’s Office helped with scene control, while the Washington County CERT Team assisted with keeping firefighters hydrated. The Washington County Road and Bridge Department supplied a backhoe to remove parts of the collapsed roof.
The occupants of the home made it out safely, with no injuries to report.
Later in the day, Chappell Hill units responded at 5 p.m. to a vehicle fire at Phillips Veterinary Hospital, 5375 Highway 290 East. They arrived to find a Fiat car fully engulfed. Firefighters deployed an attack line, extinguished the fire and cooled down the car before performing overhaul to ensure the fire was completely out.
Around 5:30 p.m., the department was called to assist as mutual aid with a reported grass fire in Waller County. Some firefighters, who were still on scene at the vehicle fire, began responding to the new call but received notice from Waller County that Chappell Hill could cancel their response.
Fiat stands for Fix It Again Tony only in this case nothing to fix. Glad not one was hurt.
