BRENHAM MAN KILLED IN ACCIDENT ON HIGHWAY 290 AT NORTH BERLIN ROAD

  

A Brenham man was killed in a crash with an 18-wheeler this (Friday) morning on Highway 290, west of Brenham.

The accident occurred just before 6 a.m. at the highway’s intersection with North Berlin Road.

According to DPS Sergeant Justin Ruiz, a 2019 Toyota Camry was facing south on North Berlin Road and was attempting to turn left onto the eastbound lanes of Highway 290. 

Per Sgt. Ruiz, the driver did not yield the right of way and was struck by a 1998 Freightliner tractor trailer heading westbound. 

The driver of the Toyota, 22-year-old Matthew Taing, was pronounced dead at the scene. 

The driver of the Freightliner was not injured.

Both lanes of Highway 290 were shut down for several hours while authorities investigated and cleared the scene.  Roads were fully back open as of 1:15 p.m.

Responding to the scene along with DPS were the Berlin Volunteer Fire Department, with the Brenham Fire Department as mutual aid.  Also assisting were the Washington County Sheriff’s Office and Washington County EMS.
