CUBS CLINCH DISTRICT TITLE WITH OVERTIME WIN OVER LAKE CREEK
Two years ago, the Brenham Cub Basketball Team finished the regular season 15-18 overall and only 3-11 in district. Flash forward to the present day, and it is a whole different team.
Last (Tuesday) night, the Cubs won a 61-60 overtime thriller over the Lake Creek Lions to claim sole possession of the District 17-5A Championship. The win improved Brenham to 24-8 on the season and 10-1 in district with one more regular season game to go before the playoffs.
After the game, Head Coach Colby Andrews reflected on the win.
It was not an easy night by any stretch as Lake Creek took an early 14-10 at the end of the first quarter, and ran the lead up to nine points early in the second quarter.
The Cubs rallied to outscore the Lions 15-11 in the second quarter, and tie the game 25-25 at halftime on a buzz beating three pointer by Chris Guidry.
The pattern remained the same for the second half with Lake Creek taking a lead, only for Brenham to battle back. The Lions edged the Cubs 16-15 in the third quarter to take a 41-40 lead going into the fourth.
Brenham actually took the lead 55-53, but Lake Creek's Holden Caltabiano managed to score just as time expired to tie it 55-55, and send it into overtime.
The battle continued in overtime. With the game tied at 60-60, Lake Creek fouled Brenham's JaKobe Mathis with 1.3 seconds left. Mathis missed the first free throw, but sank the second one to give the Cubs a 61-60 lead.
Brenham managed to break up the Lions' final play and celebration was on.
After a brief chase, Andrews got the ice bucket dumped on him, and the team also got to cut down the net during the postgame activities.
Brenham was led by their senior trio of Elijah Ferguson, who had 19 points, while Issac Powell added 13 points, and JaKobe Mathis chipped in with 11 points.
Andrews talked about how important those three have been to the team.
Next for Brenham, they will wrap up the regular season with their Seniors Night game against College Station this Friday night. The opening tip-off is scheduled for 6:30pm. KWHI will have live coverage beginning with the pregame at 6:15pm.
