The invitation comes after Brenham was crowned the overall champion in both the armed and unarmed divisions at the Area Competition on Sunday.  Competing against top programs from across the country, including overseas military bases, both teams scored a perfect 3,000 points, the highest possible score in every event.

Captain Jeffrey Bayse said in a Brenham ISD press release that the Brenham cadets “have dedicated themselves to excellence, and their hard work has paid off in a big way.”  He said winning and earning a perfect score in both the armed and unarmed divisions is “an incredible accomplishment” and called it “a testament to their discipline, commitment, and leadership.”

While the National Drill Competition typically offers students the chance to travel to Washington, D.C. and compete in person, this year’s event will be held virtually.  Per the release, the shift to a virtual format is due to government budgetary issues.  Teams must record their performances and submit them for judging on April 9th.

Superintendent Clay Gillentine praised the program’s continued success, saying cadets have not only earned a national invitation for nine straight years, but have “proven they belong among the very best.”  He said, “This program instills leadership, responsibility, and teamwork—qualities that will serve these students well beyond high school.”

The cadets have also qualified for the All-Service National Drill Competition in Daytona Beach, Florida on May 3-4.  The event will bring together the top drill teams from all service branches.
