BRENHAM TRACK HALL OF HONOR INDUCTS THREE NEW MEMBERS
Three former track stars at Brenham High School are the latest inductees into the BHS Track Hall of Honor at the Bluebonnet Relays this past weekend.
Kay Schwartz ran track from 1977-1980. In her high school career, she held eight medals in five different events at the State Track Meet.
Schwartz also, at the time, set the Girls State Triple Jump record.
Antoine Howard was on the track team from 1990-1992. He was a High School All American in the long jump and the triple jump.
After college, Howard went on to qualify for the Olympic trials in 1996.
The third inductee was Will Antkowiak. From 2010-2011, Antkowiak is a former state champion in the 1600 meter run in his senior year and the two mile run in his junior year. He was also a runner-up in the two mile run his senior year.
Those were three of the best in Brenham track and field history.
Jerry “Mr. NEWMAN”, you are “the man” that coached them and helped guide their talent.
Ya’ll did well as athletes and a coach and had a helluva TEAM TOGETHER AND GOT IT DONE!
Jay W, I concur. Great athletes guided by a great coach. Way to go guys!!
Congratulations to these three who well deserve this honor. But my question how do they go about selecting these honored. Do they have a Track Commi to select or is it a one person decision? There are so many great Cub and Cubbettes who have won individual state championship events many great Relay Teams that have won State Championships broke state records some still hold Brenham High School Records who have been overlooked. I think whoever is making this decision need to seriously check the records especially from the mid 70’s and 80’s.
Coach Newman,
Congratulations on a great track program over the years. Would be great if Brenham or UIL had an archive of Brenham High School records.
I remember some really fast 4×100 and 4×400 times in Spring 1984 and 1985. Im trying to show my daughter meets and race results with Brenham relays beating teams with Joe Deloach or Leroy Burrell in the other lane, but no luck.
For nominations, the whole boys 4×400 relay from Spring 1984, 3:09? is my recall as best time of season. Then Ed in 100m 10.4? un wind aided as Jr or Sr. in 84 or 85. Coach Newman had the stopwatch, knows these times better!
Go BHS Cubs!!
