A&M CONSOLIDATED WALKS OFF A 2-1 EXTRA INNING WIN OVER CUBS

After trailing for most of the game, the A&M Consolidated Tigers walked it off with a run in the bottom of the ninth inning to escape with a 2-1 victory over the Brenham Cubs last (Tuesday) night at Tiger Field in College Station.
Brenham struck first in the top of the third. Caleb Maurer singled, and then moved to third on a double by Dalton Hart. Maurer then scored the first run of the game on a sacrifice fly by Brody Tucker to give the Cubs a 1-0 lead.
It would stay that way until the bottom of the fifth inning. After two outs, A&M Consolidated's Colton Johse hit one to centerfield, Barrett Kohring came racing in, and attempted to make a diving catch, but the ball dropped in. Johse kept right on running and ended up all the way at third base. He later scored on a wild pitch to tie the game at 1-1.
The score would remain the same until the bottom of the ninth inning. For the Tigers, Gage Boyd reached on an error, stole second, and then went to third on a groundout.
With two outs in the inning and Boyd at third, Jordan Fowler hit a ground ball to the right side. The ball got past first baseman Evan Curtis, but second baseman Landry Mendoza, who was backing up the play, picked up the ball, and threw it to pitcher Luke Hardy, who ran over to cover first base.
The first base umpire called Fowler safe after ruling that the throw had pulled Hardy off of the base. Meanwhile, Boyd came in to score the game winning run. Brenham protested the call, but to no avail.
Brayden Steele got the start and went the first 4 2/3 innings, while Hardy pitched the last four innings. They combined to give up only four hits, three walks, two runs, neither were earned, and struck out five.
With the win, the Tigers and the Cubs are now tied for second place in the District 17-5A standings. Both teams are 4-3. Brenham is 13-9-1 overall.
The series continues this Friday at Fireman’s Park. First pitch is scheduled for 7pm. KWHI will have live coverage beginning with the pregame at 6:35pm.
