CUBETTES RUN-RULE HUNTSVILLE 12-2 ON YOUTH NIGHT
In front of a large crowd at Alumni Field for Youth Night last (Tuesday) night, the Brenham Cubettes made a big statement with a 12-2 win over the Huntsville Lady Hornets.
Brenham got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first inning with a couple of runs. Sarah Mabie reached on a one-out double. McKenzie Tiemann followed with a single that also moved Mabie to third base. Kinley Antkowiak followed with a ground out that allowed Mabie to score the first run of the game. Kylie Baker later reached on an error that allowed Tiemann to score, and give the Cubettes a 2-0 lead.
The next run for Brenham came during the bottom of the third inning. Antkowiak reached on a fielder's choice. Baker followed with a single, and then on an error by Huntsville, Antkowiak came around to score to make it 3-0 Cubettes.
The score would remain the same until the fourth inning when it turned in to home-run derby. Laityn Davis, Avery Maurer, and Sarah Mabie hit three straight home-runs. The back-to-back-to-back jacks gave Brenham a 6-0 advantage. McKenzie Tiemann hit a double, and scored when Antkowiak reached on an error by Huntsville. Baker, then, singled home Antkowiak. Sloan Tucker came in to courtesy run for Baker and scored on a steal of home that made it 9-0 Cubettes.
Kylie Baker got the start and cruised right along allowing only one hit over five shutout innings and struck out eight. In an emotional moment for the team, Heidi Busker, a senior who was thought to be lost for the season due to injury, came in to pitch for what would turn the final inning. It was her first outing in nearly a year. She allowed two runs, only one was earned in the inning. The Lady Hornets cut the lead down to 9-2.
In the bottom half of the sixth inning, Tiemann started it off with a double, Antkowiak reached on an error by Huntsville, and Kyla Garcia was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Harper Castillo reached on another Hornet error that scored Tiemann with the tenth run of the game. Two batters later, Davis walked it off with a two run double to enforce the ten-run mercy rule, 12-2.
With the win, Brenham improves to 14-9 on the season and 5-4 in district. They have now taken over sole possession of third place. The Cubettes will travel to College Station on Friday night for a 6:30pm game against A&M Consolidated.
