BLINN TO OFFER EMT-BASIC COURSES AT BRENHAM CAMPUS FOR FIRST TIME IN FALL

  

The Blinn College District is excited to announce the addition of Emergency Medical Technician (EMT-Basic) courses to the Brenham Campus for the first time this fall. The courses will take place in Blinn’s state-of-the-art Science, Technology, Engineering, and Innovation Building.

EMSP 1501: Emergency Medical Technician and EMSP 1160: EMT Clinical will prepare students for certification as EMTs. EMSP 1501 provides students with essential skills necessary for emergency medical care at the basic life support level. Students will gain clinical knowledge, learn practical skills required in pre-hospital care, and demonstrate professional ethics consistent with the expectations of EMTs.

EMSP 1160 offers a supervised, hands-on clinical experience, allowing students to directly apply theoretical knowledge and practical skills in real-world settings.

Students who complete both courses are qualified for certification by the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) and the Texas Department of State Health Services.

EMTs are trained healthcare professionals who provide critical emergency care and transportation for patients experiencing medical crises. EMTs are often the first responders to emergencies, assessing and stabilizing patients before and during transport to medical facilities.

“These courses are perfect for anyone considering careers in healthcare, fire science, or nursing,” said Program Director Zack Varner. “This training is particularly beneficial for nursing students because of the decision-making and practical skills gained in the field."

Both courses can be completed within the fall semester, making it convenient for students to quickly enter the workforce or advance their educational pursuits.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, EMTs earn an average of $46,350 annually. However, Varner points out that local demand has significantly increased pay scales, with cities like Austin offering EMT positions starting at $60,000 per year plus benefits.

“The national data doesn’t fully reflect the higher pay available in our area,” Varner said. “This program represents an exceptional return on investment for students.”
