The 16th-ranked Blinn College men’s golf team earned a 17th-place finish at the NJCAA Division I Men’s Golf Championship this week at Sand Creek Station Golf Course in Newton, Kan.

The Buccaneers shot 62-over par during the four-day, 24-team competition. Blinn was competing in its fourth national tournament since the program launched in the fall of 2019.

Texas-based program Midland College – the top-ranked team in the country – captured the team title.

“We didn’t have the week we were looking for, but that’s golf sometimes,” Blinn head coach David Johnson said. “We could never get all five of our guys rolling in at the same time in the same round. We had some good individual rounds during each of the four days, but in team golf you are only as good as your fourth and fifth guys.”

There were some bright spots for Blinn, including a strong outing from sophomore Ben Jones. The second-year Buc went 6-over across 72 holes to place 20th overall in the field of 138 golfers.

Sophomores Volker Henkel and Landon Johnson and freshmen Cody Peters and Jaxson Daniele also competed for Blinn.

“All in all, it was a great experience for our guys, especially our freshmen who should now know how to handle themselves next year if we earn the right to come back. The sophomores got to go out at the national championship and they can carry those memories with them for a lifetime.”
