BLINN TO HOST FREE CYBERSECURITY CAMP FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS
High school students interested in technology and cybersecurity are invited to participate in a free, weeklong cybersecurity camp hosted by the Blinn College District.
The camp will take place July 7-11 at the Blinn College Innovation Center, located within the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Innovation Building at 900 Prairie Lea Street in Brenham. Sessions will run daily from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Camp registration is available at www.blinn.edu/cybersecurity.
Funded through a Department of Defense grant, the camp is provided free of charge to participants. Students will receive lunch and snacks each day and will keep the electronic equipment used during the camp, including a computer and monitor.
Led by instructors from Texas A&M University, the camp offers hands-on learning experiences in cybersecurity, including network security, ethical hacking, and real-world simulations. Students will engage in interactive workshops and collaborative projects designed to spark interest in cybersecurity careers and develop valuable technical and problem-solving skills.
“This is an incredible opportunity for students to gain firsthand experience with cutting-edge cybersecurity tools and techniques,” said Dr. Bruce Gooch, Computer Science Department Head. “With expert instruction and immersive activities, students will come away with both knowledge and confidence in this high-demand field.”
The camp will conclude Friday, July 11, with a celebratory lunch and student presentations for parents. This final event begins at 11:30 a.m. and allows participants to showcase their accomplishments and share what they have learned throughout the week.
For students in Schulenburg and the surrounding area, the Alliance for College and Career Student Success (ACCSS) will provide bus transportation to and from the camp, departing from the Blinn College-Schulenburg Campus. For more information regarding transportation from Schulenburg, please contact Susie Shank, ACCSS Director, at 979-743-5239.
Students inspired by the camp can continue their journey through Blinn’s Cybersecurity Program, offered at the Brenham and RELLIS campuses.
The 33-credit-hour Level-2 Certificate in Cybersecurity prepares students for entry-level technician opportunities in the information security sector, with emphasis in cybersecurity and digital forensics in government, private sector, and law enforcement agencies. This certificate combines networking and systems administration fundamentals with a strong focus on defensive strategies to secure networks and systems.
For students seeking a broader education, the 60-credit-hour Associate of Applied Science in Cybersecurity includes all the courses from the Level-2 certificate and adds coursework in algebra, business communication, network defense and countermeasures, and computer system forensics. Graduates can pursue careers as a security analyst or technician, network administrator, security administrator, IT support specialist, cybersecurity technician, or information security technician.
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, information security analysts earn a median salary of $124,910.
