FORMER CUB HIRED TO COACH AT RICE UNIVERSITY

On Tuesday, Rice Swimming and Diving head coach Seth Huston announced the addition of Brenham High School alumnus Guy Buls as the program’s third assistant coach.

Buls returns to his home state after spending the past year at the University of Toledo, where he was instrumental in the success of Rockets swimmer Leah Evans, who earned multiple top-10 finishes—including a standout performance at the National Invitational Championship.

Prior to Toledo, Buls spent three seasons as an assistant coach at Henderson State University in Arkadelphia, Arkansas. During the 2023–24 season, he helped lead the HSU men’s team to its highest finish in program history with a 7th-place showing at the NCAA Division II National Championships. He also played a key role in the development of Kiara Pozvai, who became the program’s first-ever female national champion by winning the 100-meter freestyle in 48.88 seconds.

A native of Brenham, Buls was a standout swimmer at Henderson State, where he served as team captain and was named MVP. His time of 4:02.03 in the 400 IM still ranks as the fourth-fastest in program history. A four-time academic all-conference selection, he graduated in 2016 with a degree in business finance before beginning his coaching career.
