TCEQ TO HOST PUBLIC MEETING MONDAY IN GIDDINGS FOR LEE CO. COMPOST FACILITY

The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) will hold a public meeting this (Monday) evening regarding a proposed compost facility in Lee County.

Hundreds of residents met in December at the St.
John Lutheran Church Family Life Center to protest
a compost facility that has submitted an application
with the Texas Commission on Environmental
Quality to operate on property near Lincoln.

The meeting will be held in the Giddings High School cafeteria, beginning with an open house at 6 p.m. where TCEQ staff will answer questions.  A formal presentation will start at 7 p.m.

The TCEQ is reviewing a permit application from Austin-based Break It Down, LLC, who is looking to operate a compost facility on land at Private Road 3264, near Lincoln.  The company services multi-family housing and businesses in the Austin and Waco areas.

Residents and local city and county officials have expressed concerns about the facility, including its potential environmental impacts, odor, and the risk of contaminating water supplies like Lake Somerville.

Resolutions have been filed by the City of BrenhamWashington County, City of Giddings and Lee County, all asking the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) to reject any proposed composting facility there.

Legislation was passed during the most recent legislative session by Senator Lois Kolkhorst in response to those concerns.  Senate Bill 2078 restricts where cities with mandatory composting ordinances can send their waste, unless the receiving county authorizes it.  The bill becomes effective on September 1st, so the TCEQ is still considering the permit application.
