The Blinn College women’s golf team followed up a strong start to its fall season with another solid performance, this time at the Waco River Classic at the Cottonwood Creek Golf Course in Waco, Texas.

The Buccaneers completed the two-day, two-round tournament Tuesday with a third-place finish in the 10-team field.

Blinn shot 40-overall. Weatherford College finished 29-over for first place.

The Bucs also entered a second squad, which placed sixth.

The Bucs now have two top-three finishes to begin the year after winning the Texas Intercollegiate tournament on Sept. 9.

“We scored with the leaders today but just couldn’t cut into the lead,” said Blinn assistant coach Gary Belt, who manages the women’s team during tournaments. “I was encouraged by their play.”

Bucs freshman Ava Murcer shot 7-over individually for a fifth-place tie to earn all-tournament honors. Sixty-one total golfers made up the field.

Sophomore Abiha Syed shot 10-over for 11th place, and freshman Jacqueline Lawrence cracked the top 20 at 16th with a 12-over showing. Sophomore Daniah Syed finished 21st at 14-over.

“The team struggled to score effectively to open the first day, and we were fighting our swings a bit,” Belt added. “The team was off their game early in the first round and we dug ourselves into a hole. We had a great warm-up ahead of the second round and appeared ready to compete, and we began finding our footing across the final 12 holes.”

Blinn gets back to work when it enters play at the two-day Jacksonville College Invite on Monday, Sept. 29, at the Cherokee Ranch Golf Club in Jacksonville, Texas.
