AREA UNEMPLOYMENT RATES GROW IN AUGUST

  

Jobless rates in Washington and neighboring counties rose from July to August.

According to the Texas Workforce Commission, Washington County’s unemployment rate grew from 4 percent in July to 4.3 percent in August.

The county’s number of unemployed residents increased from 717 in July to 777 last month.

Employment numbers grew slightly, from 17,326 in July to 17,329 in August.  Meanwhile, the total civilian labor force went up over that time from 18,043 to 18,106. 

In August 2024, Washington County’s unemployment rate sat at 4 percent, with 712 people out of work.

The state reported an adjusted jobless rate of 4.1 percent for August, up from 4 percent the month prior.

Around the region, unemployment rates in August include:

  • Austin County – 4.5 percent, up from 3.9 percent in July.
  • Brazos County – 4.1 percent, up from 3.8 percent.
  • Burleson County – 4 percent, up from 3.5 percent.
  • Colorado County – 4.4 percent, up from 3.7 percent.
  • Fayette County – 4.3 percent, up from 3.8 percent in July.
  • Grimes County – 5.2 percent, up from 4.9 percent.
  • Lee County – 3.8 percent, up from 3.6 percent.
  • Waller County – 5.7 percent, up from 5.4 percent.
