BIG SECOND HALF BY CUB FOOTBALL LEADS TO 49-7 WIN OVER GILMER
What started off as a pretty even matchup through the first half ended up a blowout after the Brenham Cub Football Team exploded in the second half for a 49-7 win over Gilmer last (Friday) night in Longview.
Playing on neutral turf at Lobo Stadium, Brenham got the scoring going in the first quarter with an 18-yard touchdown run by C.J. Glover to take the early 7-0 lead.
Then, about midway through the second quarter, the Buckeyes would find their way into the end zone to tie the game at 7-7. That would be the only time Gilmer reached the end zone as the Cubs went on to score 42 unanswered points to get the win.
The Buckeyes appeared to have some momentum, and were marching down the field on Brenham, but an interception by Trelyn Kelly ended their hopes on the drive.
On the ensuing possession, Xyran Upshaw marched the Cubs down the field, and scored on a rushing touchdown with 27 seconds left in the first half to give Brenham a 14-7 lead going into the locker room.
The third quarter was a big one for the Cubs. It started with Upshaw finding Chris Guidry on a seven-yard TD pass to increase the Brenham lead to 21-7.
Later in the quarter, J'Rius Booker came up with a big fumble recovery, and the Cubs would score on their next possession via a 28-yard run by Upshaw, which made it 28-7.
Then for good measure, Upshaw found Guidry on a 62-yard touchdown pass that increased the Brenham advantage to 35-7. That catch also put Guidry over the 2,000 yard mark for his high school career, becoming the first Brenham Cub receiver to ever do so.
The Cubs would get two more touchdowns in the fourth quarter. Cartelle Brown broke loose for an 81-yard touchdown run, while Tre Taylor scored on a two-yard run to make it 49-7 Brenham.
The win improves the Cubs to 5-0 on the season. Brenham is off now for their bye week. They will return to action on Friday, October 10, for their district opener against Waco High School at Waco ISD Stadium. KWHI will have live coverage beginning with the pregame at 6:30pm, followed by the kickoff at 7pm on 1280AM, 101.7FM, and kwhi.com.
