BLINN WOMEN’S SOCCER RALLIES TO BEAT WESTERN TEXAS
Story by Joe Alberico, Blinn College Sports Information
The Blinn College women’s soccer team got back into the win column Tuesday night with a 3-2 non-region home win over Western Texas College at Rankin Field in Brenham, Texas.
The come-from-behind victory improved the Buccaneers to 5-3-2 overall.
“It’s always a good day when you get a victory, especially on your own pitch,” Blinn head coach Alexandria Jackson said. “We let Western Texas take control of the match in the second half, but I was proud of how our team responded when faced with adversity.”
The Bucs led 1-0 early before the Westerners pulled ahead with goals in the 67th and 69th minutes.
Blinn found the equalizer in the 75th minute when sophomore midfielder Marguerite Funk sent a cross from the top-left corner of the box to midfielder Saya Shiratzuki. From the top of the box, Shiratzuki quickly lofted a shot over the outstretched hand of Western Texas goalkeeper Karmen Coronado.
The match was decided in the 87th minute when Blinn freshman forward Khadeeja Rhoden collided with Coronado on an attempted shot. The ball was deflected and recovered near the top of the box by Funk, who booted the go-ahead goal into an unguarded Westerners net.
Rhoden was responsible for Blinn’s first goal of the match in the ninth minute when she took a cross from sophomore midfielder Rebecca Madrid and bent a shot from the top of the box past a diving Coronado.
Blinn finished with 17 shots.
Freshman keeper Mia King earned the victory for the Bucs after making four saves. She jumped to 3-0 on the year.
Up next, Blinn gets back to work in Region 14 when it hosts Texas Southmost College at 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 7, at Rankin Field.
