BRENHAM GAMECHANGERS, BRENHAM ISD HOSTING FIRST EVER ‘BIG EVENT’ SATURDAY

Brenham ISD students and community members are coming together tomorrow (Saturday) for a day of service.

The Brenham GameChangers organization is partnering with Brenham ISD to host the first “Big Event” in Brenham, taking place across school campuses.  Volunteers will participate in dozens of projects like painting, cleaning and landscaping.

GameChangers President Dr. Heather Thielemann, speaking during a recent edition of the KWHI Community Corner, said the Big Event originally started at Texas A&M University in 1982 and has grown over the decades to become the largest one-day, student-led service project in the United States.

The “Big Event” begins at 9 a.m. at Cub Stadium, on the visitor’s side.  After a welcome ceremony and breakfast from food vendors on site, volunteers will head off for their projects.

The event is expected to last around 4 hours.  Lunches to go will be served at the stadium after completion of the projects.

Volunteers should wear work clothes, but all supplies will be provided.  Students will be able to earn service hours toward the high school’s green chord program.

Dr. Thielemann said the goal is to grow the event beyond the schools and begin taking on projects around town.
