BLINN WOMEN’S SOCCER BEATS LSU-EUNICE ON SOPHOMORES NIGHT
Story by Joe Alberico, Blinn College Sports Information
A historic night for Marguerite Funk and a stellar performance from the Buccaneer defense led the Blinn College women’s soccer team to a 1-0 shutout of Louisiana State University-Eunice on Friday at Rankin Field in Brenham, Texas.
Blinn’s third consecutive Region 14 victory bumped its season record to 8-3-2 overall and 6-3-2 in the region standings.
“Tonight was about protecting our home pitch,” Bucs head coach Alexandria Jackson said. “Six wins, one loss, and a statement that this is our house. We earned home-field advantage (for the Region 14 Tournament) the same way we’ve built everything this season — through belief, discipline, and trust.”
The match was played to a scoreless tie for 44 minutes before Funk got the Bucs on the board. The sophomore midfielder took an assist from freshman defender Tristan Smith and sophomore defender Ashlee Rodriguez and turned it into a spectacular game-winning goal on a cross just outside of the LSU-Eunice box.
The goal was Funk’s ninth of the season, tying Blinn women’s soccer’s single-season mark. Funk is now two goals shy of tying the program’s career record.
The Bucs defense made sure Funk’s goal would stand with another outstanding effort. Blinn earned its third consecutive shutout and fifth of the season.
In goal for the Bucs was freshman keeper Haidlyn Hawkins, who made four saves to improve to 4-3-2 on the year.
Blinn’s regular season comes to a close when it visits Texas Southmost College for a region match at 10 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 24, in Brownsville, Texas.
