BURTON PANTHER FOOTBALL SUFFERS FIRST LOSS OF THE SEASON AGAINST IOLA

Kayden Patterson (Burton ISD)

In a game that came down to the wire, the Iola Bulldogs pulled out a 37-36 victory over the Burton Panther Football Team on Friday night.

Iola jumped on Burton with a pair of rushing touchdowns in the first quarter, 47 yards and 20 yards respectively, to take an early 14-0 lead.

In the second quarter, Kayden Patterson got the Panthers on the board with a 36-yard touchdown pass to Caleb Nossaman. Rueben Rodriguez added the extra point to cut the Bulldogs' lead to 14-7.

Patterson later scored on a four-yard touchdown run and Rodriguez added another PAT to tie the game at 14-14.

However, the Bulldogs added another touchdown on a four-yard run of their own to take a 21-14 lead at halftime.

In the third quarter, Patterson reached the end zone on a 15-yard run, and Rodriguez kicked the extra point to tie it up again at 21-21.

The fourth quarter opened with Patterson giving Burton their first lead of the game on a 40-yard touchdown run. Rodriguez added another PAT to make it 28-21 Panthers.

Iola would come back to tie it on a three-yard run to make it 28-28. Then, they retook the lead on a 12-yard run, but missed the extra point to make it 34-28 Bulldogs.

Patterson scored his fourth touchdown of the night and Eli Simank ran in the two-point conversion to give Burton a 36-34 lead.

It all came down to the final play. Iola threw what appeared to be an incomplete pass as time expired. However, the Panthers were penalized for pass interference. That set the Bulldogs up at the Burton seven-yard line for one untimed down, because the game can't end on a defensive penalty. Iola then proceeded to kick a game winning 24-yard field goal for the win.

The loss drops Burton to 8-1 on the season and 5-1 in district. Next Friday, they will wrap up the district schedule by facing the front-runner Granger. Granger is coming off of a 58-14 win over Somerville that upped their record to 9-0 on the season, and 6-0 in district. Kickoff is scheduled for 7pm at Panther Stadium in Burton.
