After three straight games where the final result was inevitable by halftime, the Brenham Cubs won a dogfight over Killeen Ellison 33-25 last (Friday) night.

It was the Cubs' first home game in six weeks. In their last home game, Brenham defeated Bryan back on September 12.

In addition to a night where he was named Homecoming King, Chris Guidry surpassed Tremund Moore to become Brenham's all-time career receptions leader on a 14-yard touchdown pass from Xyran Upshaw. Moore set the record in 2011 with 102. Guidry finished the game with five receptions for 78 yards and two touchdowns. He caught a 25-yard touchdown pass as well. The five receptions put him at 104 for his career with two regular season games, and the playoffs still to go.

Cartelle Brown also had a good night with five catches for 70 yards and two touchdowns. Xyran Upshaw completed 11 out of 18 passes for 159 yards and four touchdowns.

The passing game made up for a running game that struggled against the Ellison defense. C.J. Glover finished with 14 carries for 33 yards and a touchdown, while Upshaw had 14 carries for 28 yards. The Cubs finished as a team with 29 carries for 60 yards, an average of 2.1 yards per carry.

The Eagles actually outgained Brenham 368 yards to 219 yards. Ellison QB Marlyn Smith, who is just a sophomore, was 21 of 41 passing for 261 yards, a touchdown, and two interceptions. He was also their leading ball carrier with 19 rushes for 68 yards. Prince Hall was the leading receiver with six catches for 113 yards and a touchdown.

Penalties were also a factor in the game. Brenham was flagged 15 times for 151 yards, while Ellison was penalized 16 times for 139 yards.

On the final drive, Ellison had a chance to tie it with a touchdown and a two-point conversion. With ten seconds left on the clock, and the Eagles having the ball on the Cubs' 11-yard line, Smith threw an incomplete pass on 4th down that allowed Brenham to hold on for the win.

The Cubs improve to 8-0 overall and 3-0 in district. They have also clinched a playoff spot. Next week, Brenham will make its second trip to Waco ISD Stadium this season. This time, they are going to take on University, who is coming off a 36-7 win over Waco on Friday night to also remain unbeaten in district at 3-0. The Trojans are 5-3 overall.

KWHI will have live coverage beginning with the pregame at 6:30pm, and the kickoff at 7pm on 1280AM, 101.7FM, and KWHI.com.
