CUB FOOTBALL LOSES FIRST GAME OF THE SEASON TO UNIVERSITY 42-14

Xyran Upshaw

Halloween night ended up being a nightmare for the Brenham Cub Football Team as they lost their first game of the season to the University Trojans 42-14.

The Trojans got off to a fast start in the first quarter with a pair of touchdowns. Darrius Thomas scored on a nine-yard run, and then Savoy Nichols found London Smith, a Baylor commit, for a 10-yard touchdown pass to make it 14-0 University.

In the second quarter, Nichols would find Smith on a 24-yard touchdown pass to increase the Trojan advantage to 21-0 going into the locker room at half time.

The Cubs' offense struggled in the first half managing just 97 yards, 36 rushing and 61 passing.

The second half started similar to the first with Nichols finding Jimare Thomas on a 25-yard touchdown pass to give University a 28-0 lead in the third quarter.

Brenham finally got on the scoreboard as Xyran Upshaw hooked up with Chris Guidry on a 45-yard touchdown pass to cut the Trojan lead to 28-7.

While the running game continued to struggle in the second half, the passing game picked up. In the first half, Upshaw completed only 3 out of 7 passes for 61 yards and an interception. In the second half, Upshaw was 15 out of 25 for 209 yards, one touchdown, and an interception.

Guidry only caught two passes for 27 yards in the first half. In the second half, he caught 11 passes for 165 yards and a touchdown. He also surpassed 1,000 receiving yards for the season.

Nichols and Smith would connect one more time on a 60-yard touchdown pass to make it 35-7 Trojans. Smith finished the game with 10 catches for 166 yards, and three touchdowns.

The Cubs found the end zone for a second time on a trick play that saw Guidry throw a 17-yard touchdown pass to Nate Rau in the fourth quarter. That cut the lead to 35-14.

However, that would be it for Brenham in the scoring department.

University added one final touchdown on a 55-yard interception return for a touchdown by Rashad Smith, which made the final score 42-14.

With the win, University (9-0, 6-0) has clinched at least a share of the District 10-5A Division II Championship. They can win it outright next week with a victory over Killeen Ellison.

Brenham (8-1, 5-1) now has to put the loss behind them and get ready for Belton on Friday at 7pm at Cub Stadium. The winning team will get the second seed in the district and a first round home game.

It is Hall of Honor Night, as well. Former Cubs Donyell Jones, Ty Schlottmann, Michael Walker, and Malcolm Brown will be inducted at a luncheon at Blinn College and then be honored on the field at the game itself.

KWHI will broadcast the festivities live beginning with the pregame at 6:30pm, followed by the opening kickoff at 7pm on 1280AM, 101.7FM, and KWHI.com.
