FOOTBALL PREVIEW: BRENHAM VS. BELTON

The Brenham Cub Football Team is down to their final game of the regular season, and getting ready to face a familiar foe, the Belton Tigers.

Last year, Brenham won 42-24. The game that was played two years ago went to Belton 27-20.

The Cubs are 8-1 overall, while the Tigers are 5-4. Both teams are 3-1 in District 10-5A Division II.

They both defeated Killeen Ellison, Bryan Rudder, and Waco. The only loss for either team is to District Champion Waco University.

The winner goes into the playoffs as the #2 seed, while the loser goes into the playoffs as the #3 seed.

The Cubs are led on the field by QB Xyran Upshaw (Sr.), who has completed 79 out of 135 passes for 1,508 yards, 20 touchdown passes, and six interceptions. He is also the second leading rusher on the team with 80 carries for 291 yards, and five touchdowns.

RB C.J. Glover (So.) leads the ground game for Brenham with 125 carries for 817 yards, and 12 touchdowns.

WR Chris Guidry (Sr.) has been Upshaw's go-to guy in the air. Guidry has 52 receptions for 1,069 yards, and 18 touchdowns. WR Cartelle Brown (Sr.) is the team's second leading pass catcher with 26 receptions for 475 yards, and four touchdowns.

On defense, LB Caleb Espinoza (Sr.) is the team's top tackler with 58. Right behind him is DT Job Rodriguez (Jr.) with 54 tackles. LB Kristian Prosper (Sr.) and LB Brooks Roznovsky (Jr.) are tied for third place with 48 tackles each.

Cub Head Coach Danny Youngs talked about the importance of the game.

The Tigers are led by QB Will Shepard (Jr.), who has completed 107 of 156 passes for 1,473 yards, 12 touchdowns and eight interceptions. He is also part of the Belton rushing attack where he is second on the team in carries with 97, and leads the team with 504 rushing yards and nine rushing touchdowns.

Aiding in the running attack are RB Gino Zecca (Sr.) with 106 carries for 485 yards and five touchdowns, as well as RB Javid Nua Planz (Jr.) with 82 carries for 383 yards and five touchdowns.

The top receiver for the Tigers is WR Gavin Ross (Jr.), who has 75 catches for 1,048 yards, and ten touchdowns. They also have WR Cason Morton (So.), who has 20 catches for 283 yards, and a touchdown.

On defense, their leading tackler is LB Oakley Torres (So.) with 65 total tackles (47 solo and 18 assists.)

Kickoff is scheduled for tonight (Friday) at 7pm at Cub Stadium in Brenham. It is also Hall of Honor Night. Former Cubs Donyell Jones, Ty Schlottmann, Michael Walker, and Malcolm Brown will be honored on the field prior to the game.
