After suffering a tough loss to Waco University last week, the Brenham Cub Football Team bounced back with a dominating 49-28 win over the Belton Tigers to clinch the district's #2 seed before a packed house at Cub Stadium on Friday night.
It was also Hall of Honor Night, where Brenham honored four former Cub players: Donyell Jones, Michael Walker, Ty Schlottman, and Malcom Brown.
After the Tigers scored the first touchdown of the game, C.J. Glover reached the end zone on a 16-yard touchdown run to tie the game at 7-7.
The Cubs would take the lead a short time later after Jase Mueller returned a blocked punt for a touchdown to put Brenham in front 14-7.
Then, Xyran Upshaw found Hagen Frank on a 30-yard touchdown pass to give Brenham a 21-7 lead at the end of the first quarter.
In the second quarter, the Cubs made it 28 points in a row as Upshaw found Chris Guidry on a 14-yard touchdown pass to increase the lead to 28-7.
Belton finally reached the end zone to cut the Brenham lead in half 28-14.
The Cubs added two more touchdowns on a 20-yard touchdown pass from Upshaw to Guidry, and a one-yard touchdown run by C.J., Glover to take a 42-14 lead at halftime.
Brenham added a final touchdown in the third quarter as Upshaw found Frank on a 26-yard touchdown run to push the advantage to 49-14.
Belton scored a couple of touchdowns in the fourth quarter, but by then the game had been decided.
Chris Guidry broke two more school records in the game. Guidry entered the game tied with Tremund Moore (2011) and JaQuay Cross (2014) with 18 receiving touchdowns in a single season, and with his two touchdowns last (Friday) night, he is now up to 20. He also surpassed Cross for most receiving yards in a single season. Cross set the record with 1,116 yards in 2014. With Guidry's 102 yards last (Friday) night, he is now at 1,171 yards for the season.
With the win, Brenham is now 9-1 on the season, and finished district with a 4-1 record. By finishing the district in second place, the Cubs are guaranteed a home game in the Bi-District round. They are waiting to find out, who they will play next. Fort Bend Marshall, who is a potential opponent, is playing today (Saturday) against Baytown Lee. As soon as we get the details, we will pass it along.
