FOOTBALL PREVIEW: BRENHAM VS. TEXAS CITY

Xyran Upshaw

The Brenham Cub Football Team is ready to get back to business later this (Friday) evening as they open the Bi-District Round of the playoffs against the Texas City Stingarees.

After suffering their first loss of the season against University two weeks ago, the Cubs bounced back last week with a 49-28 win over the Belton Tigers. The win improved Brenham to 9-1 overall and 4-1 in district.

Senior QB Xyran Upshaw is the leader on the offense. He has completed 94 of 152 passes (62%) for 1,741 yards, 24 touchdowns to just 6 interceptions, and a QB Rating of 124.5. Upshaw is just 259 yards away from 2,000 yards passing for the season.

He is also the second leading rusher on the team with 89 carries for 349 yards and five touchdowns.

Sophomore RB C.J. Glover has 147 carries for 992 yards and 14 touchdowns. He just needs eight yards to crack the 1,000-yard barrier for the season.

Senior WR Chris Guidry is having an incredible season for the Cubs. He currently has 58 catches for 1,171 yards, and 20 touchdowns. Brenham's other Senior WR Cartelle Brown has 30 catches for 497 yards and four touchdowns.

Brooks Roznovsky

On defense, Senior LB Caleb Espinoza leads the Cubs in tackles with 64. Right behind him are Junior DT Job Rodriguez with 57, Junior LB Brooks Roznovsky with 52, and Kristian Prosper with 51.

Senior DE Jase Mueller leads the team in sacks with five, while Prosper has four.

For Texas City, they are the number three seed out of their district. They are 5-4 on the season, and were 4-3 in district. The Stingarees are coming off of a 40-7 loss to #4 Ranked Iowa Colony.

Their district also includes last year's State Champion, and this year's #2 Ranked Team, Richmond Randle.

Brenham Cub Head Footbal Coach Danny Youngs said that with Randle, Iowa Colony, and the #4 team, Fort Bend Marshall, in their district, Texas City is definitely battle tested.

Kickoff is scheduled for 7pm at Cub Stadium in Brenham. Doug Brown and Tommy Lange will have the call of the action on KWHI 1280AM, 101.7FM, and the KWHI.com Main Feed.

The winner will move on to the Area Round next week to face Liberty Hill, who beat San Antonio Lanier last night.
