CUB FOOTBALL DEFEATS TEXAS CITY 28-7 TO WIN BI-DISTRICT
In front of a packed house at Cub Stadium last (Friday) night, the Brenham Cub Football Team defeated the Texas City Stingarees 28-7 to claim the Bi-District Championship.
Texas City got on the board first as QB Clyde Votaw scored on a 19-yard scamper with 8:42 left in the first quarter, followed by an extra point from Ossiel Guerra to take the early 7-0 lead.
After that, it was all Cubs.
Brenham would bounce back as Xyran Upshaw found Cartelle Brown on a 12-yard touchdown pass at the 1:06 mark, and Bleu Cienega added the PAT to tie it 7-7.
In the second quarter, Upshaw threw his second touchdown pass of the night, a 33-yarder to C.J. Glover. Cartelle Brown ran in the two-point conversion. That gave the Cubs a 15-7 lead with 8:50 to go until halftime.
Later, Upshaw found Brown on a pass that looked like he might be stopped for no gain or even a loss, but the senior wide receiver broke free and dashed 62 yards to the end zone. Cienega added an extra point to give Brenham a 22-7 advantage with 6:44 left in the second quarter.
In the third quarter, the Cub offense moved the ball, but once they got into the red zone, they had to settle for field goals. Cienega kicked one from 35 yards at 6:38, and another one from 41 yards with 2:15 left.
There were no points scored on either side in the fourth quarter, and so the 28-7 score ended up being the final score.
With the win, Brenham is now 10-1 on the season. It is the first time that Brenham has had back-to-back ten win seasons since 2010 and 2011.
They are also the 20th team in Brenham High School history to have a 10-0 win season.
The Cub defense held the Stingarees offense to just 181 yards of total offense. Texas City converted only one of ten third down chances.
Next up, Brenham will move on to the Area Round of the playoffs, where they will face Liberty Hill on Friday at 7pm in Hutto. Liberty Hill is coming off of a 62-0 win over San Antonio Lanier this past Thursday.
These same two teams met in the Area Round last year with the Cubs getting a 30-27 victory.
KWHI will have live coverage beginning with the pregame at 6:30pm followed by the kickoff at 7pm on 1280AM, 101.7FM, and KWHI.com.
