LEE COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE REMOVING INMATE ROSTER FROM THEIR WEBSITE

The Lee County Sheriff's Office in Giddings is notifying the public that its popular online inmate roster will no longer be available on their website.

According to Sheriff Garrett Durrenberger, the decision comes in response to a significant rise in scam activity, identity exploitation, and fraudulentschemes that have targeted both inmates and their families using information taken from the roster.

The Sheriff’s Office has been made aware of an increasing number of calls involving scammers who used publicly accessible inmate information to contact family members, solicit money, impersonate officials, or circulate false claims about bail, fines, or release requirements.

Thechange does not restrict legitimate access to inmate information.

Members of the public may still obtain verified details by filing an Open Records Request.

Sheriff Durrenberger encourages residents to remain cautious of unsolicited calls, texts, or messages claiming to be from law enforcement or requiring payment related to an inmate.

Durrenberger added that any request for money, gift cards, account transfers, pre-trial services, or personal information related to an inmate should be treated as a red flag. He said when in doubt call the Sheriff’s Office, and they will always provide accurate information through official channels.

In a statement on their website, the Lee County Sheriff's Office said that they appreciate the public's understanding and cooperation as they work to safeguard the community from fraudulent activity.
