BRENHAM PARKS & REC BOARD TO VOTE ON USAGE AGREEMENT FOR JACKSON ST. PARK PICKLEBALL COURTS

The Brenham Parks and Recreation Advisory Board will hear a reservation request on Wednesday for use of the new pickleball courts at Jackson Street Park.

In October 2024, the city entered into an exclusive reservation use agreement with the Brenham Pickleball Club for use of the six older courts for specific days and times.  With the four new courts now open for play, a new agreement is needed.

The club is requesting exclusive usage for all 10 courts on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays from 6 to 9 p.m. year-round.  City staff is considering a counter-proposal that would offer semi-exclusive use, providing eight courts for league play during the hours requested while keeping two courts open for public use in those hours.

The pickleball group pays player fees to reimburse the city for use of facilities for leagues.

Also in session, the board will possibly act on stricter rules and regulations for rental of the Dr. Bobbie M. Dietrich Memorial Amphitheatre at Hohlt Park.

According to the agenda packet, the city has received some complaints and had some negative interactions with rentals at the amphitheatre.  The city also says it wishes to get away from ongoing rentals week after week by businesses or organizations, in favor of a return to what the facility was originally designed for: enhancing education and visual arts for the community.

In other business, the board will vote on electing new board members for a three-year term, set 2026 meeting dates and hear staff reports.

The board will meet Wednesday at noon in the second-floor conference room at Brenham City Hall.
