HUNTSVILLE DEFEATS CUBETTE BASKETBALL IN A GAME THAT SAW VISITING CROWD EJECTED
The Huntsville Lady Hornets pulled out a 53-47 victory over the Brenham Cubette Basketball Team last (Tuesday) night at the Brenham High School Gym. However, it was an unusual moment in the fourth quarter that ended up being the story of the game.
The referee trio had been hearing complaints from both sides over the course of the District 17-5A matchup during the entire game. With 1:54 left to go, the Lady Hornets were called for a foul, as Brenham was trying to mount a comeback. The Huntsville crowd in attendance started chanting "Take His Whistle," at one of the referees.
The referee had enough, called a technic foul, and responded by throwing the entire Huntsville side of the crowd out of the game. Brenham High School Principal Michael Watts along with two Brenham Police Officers, who were working security, were called over to help usher the fans out of the gym, where they had to finish the game in the hallway.
The game went back and forth all night with the Lady Hornets getting leads, and Brenham battling back. The Cubettes led the game after the first quarter by a score of 12-10.
Huntsville came back to outscore Brenham 13-8 in the second quarter, which gave them a 23-20 halftime lead.
The Lady Hornets outscored the Cubettes 12-11 in the third quarter, which increased their advantage to 35-31. Brenham struggled with their shooting at the start of the third quarter, but managed to battle back, and keep it to a four-point game.
In the fourth quarter, after the showdown between the fans and the referee, Janiyah Mathis hit three out of four free throws to close the gap.
However, the Lady Hornets went on one final run to pull away for good.
Mathis led the way for Brenham with 16 points, while Antyiahna Lang added nine points.
The Cubettes drop to 16-10 overall and 0-3 in district.
Next up, Brenham will be at A&M Consolidated on Friday night at 6:30pm.
