BRENHAM FIREFIGHTERS RESPOND TO STRUCTURE FIRES, MULTIPLE GAS LEAKS OVER WEEKEND
The Brenham Fire Department responded to 17 calls between Saturday and early Sunday morning.
Around 7:30 a.m. Saturday, members of the Brenham Fire Department and Chappell Hill Volunteer Fire Department received a report of a structure fire at a business in the 7800 block of Highway 290 East. They arrived to find smoke showing from the rear of the building. The Brenham Fire Department entered the building and extinguished the fire inside, while Chappell Hill volunteers worked on extinguishing the hopper outside. Once the fire was out, all units returned to service.
Around 12:15 p.m., another structure fire was called in from a residence in the 2000 block of FM 389. Firefighters found smoke coming from the back side of the home and located a fire right beside the home. They used tank water to put out the fire and found no extension inside the home.
Close to 2:30 p.m., units were dispatched to a fire alarm at the Brenham State Supported Living Center, 4001 Highway 36 South. They learned that a resident had pulled the alarm, and there was no fire or smoke.
Just shy of 4:15 p.m., BFD members responded to a transportation incident at West Tom Green Street and South Jackson Street. They discovered a two-vehicle accident with no injuries and returned to service once the vehicles were removed from the roadway.
Approaching 5:15 p.m., the department was dispatched to the 900 block of Legrand Street for a rescue call. Personnel found a baby’s leg stuck in a crib and pulled the bars enough to remove the baby’s leg from between the bars. EMS checked the baby out, and the baby did not receive any injuries.
At roughly the same time, a fire alarm was called in from a home in the 1300 block of Woodson Lane. Nothing was showing from the exterior of the home, and the homeowner stated it was a false alarm. No smoke or fire was found.
Nearing 7:45 p.m., units were called out to Prairie Lea Hall, 911 West Fifth Street, for a rescue call. They discovered three people trapped in an elevator between the third and fourth floor. The department opened the elevator door and let the occupants out on the third floor.
Firefighters’ next nine calls on Saturday were for gas odors or gas leaks.
Shortly after 9:15 p.m., units went out for a gas leak at a home in the 500 block of Sycamore Street. Nothing was found from the exterior of the building, but a leak was discovered in the attic, to the City of Brenham Gas Department made location to repair the leak.
Another gas leak was called in around 9:15 p.m. from a home in the 900 block of Armbrister Street. Upon arrival, firefighters did not find anything showing from the outside of the building. A leak was found at the water heater, and units waited for the Gas Department to make location.
At 9:30 p.m., the department received a report of a gas leak in the 2300 block of Gun and Rod Circle. While nothing was discovered on the outside of the building, a leak was found at the fireplace. The Gas Department turned the line off and advised the homeowner to have it repaired.
Shortly before 9:45 p.m., a gas leak was called in from a home in the 200 block of Duprie Drive. Firefighters found nothing showing from the outside of the building and no readings on the gas detector. The Gas Department released firefighters from the call.
A few minutes past 9:45 p.m., a report of a gas smell was received from a home in the 2600 block of Daisy Drive. All units were tied up on calls, so members of the Meyersville Volunteer Fire Department responded. They found a small leak inside the home, and the Gas Department made location.
Approaching 10 p.m., BFD personnel went out to High Hope Care Center, 401 East Blue Bell Road, for a gas leak. They found nothing from the outside of the building, but upon entry, they discovered the stove pilot lights were out, causing the smell. They turned the gas stove off, and the Gas Department red tagged the stove.
Shortly after 10 p.m., units received a report of a gas smell inside a home in the 2600 block of Cheri Lane. They made location and found a small gas leak by the water heater. Members of the Gas Department arrived and released firefighters from the call.
At 10:30 p.m., the fire department was dispatched for a gas smell inside a home in the 2700 block of Chase Street. Brenham units were tied up with other calls, so the Salem Volunteer Fire Department responded. They found no readings on their detector, but there was a strong smell by the fireplace. The Gas Department arrived and found a leak at the fireplace. They proceeded to turn the gas off to the home.
Close to 11 p.m., a gas smell was called in from a home in the 2700 block of Victory Lane. A small leak was found, and the Gas Department responded to repair the leak.
Just after 5 a.m. Sunday, units went out to the 1700 block of Ellen Street for an electric line sparking and found a tree limb hanging on a power pole. The City of Brenham Electric Department arrived on location to remove the tree from the pole.
