BURTON CITY COUNCIL TO CONSIDER AOKA CONTRACT, CITY SECRETARY’S RESIGNATION

The Burton City Council will meet on Tuesday to return to discussion on an agreement with a planning and inspection firm.

The council talked at length during its January meeting about a possible contract with Aoka Engineering, who assists emerging and rural communities with plan review and inspection services in order to prepare them for growth.

The contract’s scope of services would include building plan review, building inspection, public works/civil plan review and inspection, fire protection plan review and inspection, International Code Council (ICC) certified training services, facility assessments, and code enforcement services and training.

A large number of residents and business owners shared concerns with the council at January’s meeting, questioning how involved Aoka would be and its level of responsibility.  The council moved to table the item and held a workshop two weeks later to narrow the scope of the prospective agreement.

Another item on the agenda is to address the resignation of City Secretary Angela Harrington.

Harrington told KWHI she has turned in her resignation as secretary, and that her last day in the position will be Wednesday, February 11th.  She did not provide further details about her decision.

Other regular session business will include:

  • Setting a budget public hearing for the 2026-27 general and water/sewer budgets for March 10th at 5:30 p.m. at Burton City Hall.
  • An order of election and the adoption of a resolution authorizing an election services contract between the city and Washington County for the May 2nd general election.
  • A resolution authorizing the city to enter into an agreement with the state allowing the closure of a segment of the state highway system in the city’s downtown area for the annual Cotton Gin Festival, scheduled for April 18th.

Councilmembers are scheduled to hold an executive session regarding personnel matters before reconvening in a budget workshop.

The council will meet Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. at Burton City Hall.
