COMBINED NO-HITTER AND TIMELY HITTING LEADS CUBETTE SOFTBALL TO SEASON OPENING WIN

McKenzie Tiemann and McKenna Marsters
(Brenham ISD)

Brenham Cubette Head Softball Coach Katie Roberts could not have asked for a better way to open the 2026 season. A combined no-hitter and the offense scoring early and often led to the Cubettes getting a season opening 10-0 win over the Caldwell Lady Hornets. The game was called after five innings due to the mercy rule.

Kylie Baker went the first four innings without giving up a run or a hit. She did issue three walks and hit a batter. Baker also finished with ten strikeouts. Laityn Davis retired all three batters she faced in the fifth, including two more strikeouts to preserve the no-hitter.

Brenham got the ball rolling in the bottom of the first inning. McKenzie Tiemann led it off with a double, and she later came around to score on an RBI single by Harper Castillo. Davis beat out a bunt for a hit. McKenna Marsters reached on a fielder's choice. Castillo was erased going to third. Aldyn Jaks then slugged a two-run double to score Davis and Marsters, which put the Cubettes up 3-0.

In the bottom of the second inning, Payson Gurka was hit by a pitch. Ali Tiemann was trying to hit a sacrifice bunt, but the throw to first base was high, which allowed her to reach safely. McKenzie Tiemann followed that with a walk to load the bases. Harper Castillo would then come through with a two-run single that allowed Gurka and Ali to score. Castillo got caught in a rundown between first and second that allowed McKenzie to score. That made it 6-0 Cubettes after two innings.

Reagan Wall led off the bottom of the third inning by drawing a walk. Aldyn Jaks bunted her to second. Jacee Hegar would hit a line drive to first for an out, but when Caldwell tried to double up Wall, an errant throw by Caldwell first baseman Brynn Morton went out into left field. Wall got up, and she raced all the way home to make it 7-0 Brenham.

In the fourth inning, McKenzie Tiemann singled, and later stole second. She would then score when Davis reached on an error by Lady Hornets shortstop Jaelynn Gest to make it 8-0. Davis scored when a ball hit by Kylie Baker ricocheted off the glove of Caldwell second baseman Abby Lopez to make it 9-0.

The Cubettes finished it off in the bottom of the fifth. Jaks walked, Hegar singled, and they each stole the next base. Gurka followed that up with a sacrifice fly that scored Jaks with the tenth run to end the game.

Next up, Brenham will take part in the Leadoff Classic Thursday-Saturday at Alumni Field. On Thursday, the Cubettes will play Santa Fe at 11am, followed by Abilene Wylie at 5pm. KWHI will have live coverage of the game against Wylie beginning with the pregame at 4:35pm on 1280AM, 101.7FM, and KWHI.com.
