CUBETTE SOFTBALL DROPS TWO ON OPENING DAY OF LEADOFF CLASSIC
It was a rough start to the annual Leadoff Classic at Alumni Field as the Brenham Cubette Softball Team dropped a pair of games on opening day of the tournament today (Thursday). Brenham fell to Santa Fe in the opener 5-1, and then lost to Abilene Wylie 7-2 in the nightcap.
In the first game, Santa Fe jumped out to an early 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the first. They would later add two more in the fourth and one in the sixth inning, which made it a 5-0 advantage for the Lady Indians.
Brenham's lone run came in the bottom of the sixth inning on a solo homer by McKenzie Tiemann to cut Santa Fe's lead to 5-1.
The Cubettes managed just four hits in the game, three came from Harper Castillo.
Kylie Baker took the loss surrendering four runs in four innings, only two were earned. She also struck out eight batters. Laityn Davis pitched the final three innings allowing just one unearned run.

For the second game, Davis gave up three runs in the first inning and one in the second inning to give Abilene Wylie the early 4-0 lead.
In the bottom of the third inning, Ali Tiemann reached on an error by Lady Pirate 2B Angel Wright, while trying to bunt for a hit. Isabelle Hyatt did bunt for a hit, and on another error by Wylie, this time by 3B Kyra Horn, Tiemann was able to come around and score the first run of the game for Brenham to make it 4-1.
Wylie would get the run back in the top of the fourth as 1B Ava Cook crushed a solo homer over the left field fence to make it 5-1.
Brenham scored again in the bottom of the fourth. Kylie Baker drew a walk, and then went first to third on a sacrifice bunt by McKenna Marsters. Aldyn Jaks followed with single to score Baker with the second Cubette run, which trimmed the advantage to 5-2.
That would be as close as Brenham would get as Wylie tacked on two more runs in the top of the sixth inning to finish out the scoring at 7-2.
Davis took the loss in the circle going six innings and allowing seven runs, four of which were earned.
Payson Gurka pitched a scoreless seventh inning for her first outing on the varsity level.
